First Landing...

"First landing" meaning our first temporary home in Italy vs. the first plane landng for the trip.  We flew to Atlanta then to Paris & arrived as scheduled in Florence this morning to a crisp & beautifully sunny spring day.  The puffy clouds, blue skies & green hills of Tuscany were a stunning sight.

Our apartment is one of seven apartments in a converted palace that was built in the 12th century.  The living space is very roomy and full of natural light. The ceiling is the actual roof of exposed beams and red ?pottery/brick. I don't think I will have any trouble staying here-
The boys love their loft "room" & were anxious to get in their beds this evening as they were so very  tired. Before we left home we journaled some "predictions" for the trip and all 3 Kaye men voted that I would be the first one asleep on the plane (HA!) but NONE of us slept.

So, for only about 1 hour of napping in 27 hours, I think we had a fantastic first day.

Quick summary:  Checked into apartment; ate lunch with a view of Pitti Palace; walked across the Ponte Vecchio bridge; ate gelato; checked out the statues at Piazza della Signoria; watched street artists at Piazza della Repubblica; ate gelato (again); followed a parade complete with Rennaissance clad magistrates, ladies, drummers & trumpeters honoring Filippo Brunelleschi (architect of the Duomo dome); dined on pizza at the apartment; bedded the boys nearly 3 hours before most Italians are having dinner!

Tomorrow we will sleep in!

  2. Thanks so much for sharing your trip with us with your photos and narratives. It helps us to not miss you so much. Your smiles reveal all about your time there. Last evening, we ate ice cream and pizza in honor of your travels. Your blog makes us feel a part of what you are experiencing. Kiss the boys for me. You are great photographers. Love you. 3. Nash and Ross, Those loft beds look like a perfect place to end the day or write in your journals. Enjoy your upcoming museum touring with your parents today and grasp as much as you can about the Italian culture and Holy Week there. I visited Florence about 16 years ago, and I walked some of the same paths that you are walking. I am eager to see more photos and narratives from your family. Enjoy your gelato!!!!! We love you.
