May 28-
Our flight from Rome to Budapest was unremarkable except for when we arrived at the baggage claim...
Waiting there for us was our good friend Gabor Gresz. I cannot tell you how wonderful it is, after such a long time traveling and being a stranger of sorts, to be greeted by a familiar smile from someone who knows you and can call you by name! It was a true blessing to be among friends again while in Budapest.
Gabor graciously took us to our new "home" & explained that he and his wife Edina had made wonderful plans for us for the next week & that we should also expect to be served a homemade Hungarian dinner at their home the following night. What a grand surprise! We had all tasted their Chicken Paprikash when they visited the US last summer and our mouths were already watering...
Our hotel, St. George's Residence, is in the historical Castle district on the hilly side of the city known as Buda. The hotel building itself is over 700 years old and has a long history as an inn- we really did feel like we were walking the halls of a small castle home. It is also just a few minutes walk from Matthias Church and the Fisherman's Bastion which is an iconic landmark giving visitors a beautiful view of the Danube and the entire Pesh side of the city.
All of us immediately took note of the striking differences in the architecture and cuisine of Hungary compared to Italy & after a good meal & good night's rest will be ready to explore Budapest.
