Borneo Rainforest- Day 3

June 7, 2018

Right along the back of our chalet runs the Danum River.  In the mornings we wake to Macaque monkeys foraging for insects along the banks.

The brownish "spots" on the grass are actually monkeys-

See the beautiful yellow flower...

Now you don't-
These little guys are omnivorous.  Once they've had their fill of bugs, they make their way up to the trees on our balcony and have flowers for dessert!

Look closely and you see the pair of birds-

This morning, instead of a hike, we tube the river!
So very peaceful...

...for the most part!

After a morning of fun on the river, we set out for another highlight of the area, the Tree Top Canopy Walkway.  The sightings began before we made it to the trailhead-

The bees at work-

More tropical flowers-
Another orangutan!
Orangutan is translated "Man of the Forest"
This guy came down from the trees & hung around in the lower branches.
It was fascinating to watch him watching us-
An orangutan's diet is about 90% fruit but they will also eat the bark of trees for added fiber and water.  We watched him strip the bark from these limbs with his teeth then chew on the soft inner parts.

What do you do when a large male orangutan decides to cross the road?
You MOVE!   QUICKLY!!

The Canopy Walkway-
affords a view of the forest from the treetops

From here you can see how dense the canopy really is-
you can barely see the ground

30 meters (nearly 100 feet) high!

An orangutan nest-
generally they are slept in for only 1 night & then abandoned.

Excellent shot of a Red- leaf monkey by Matt-
he bid us a farewell as we were leaving the canopy.
Beautiful evening sky-
