To Danum Valley: Borneo Rainforest Lodge

June 5, 2018

Today we leave the mangrove swamps & muddy banks of the river and are headed to the rainforest of Malaysian Borneo.  We travel by car past palm oil plantations to Lahad Datu & then will travel overland in a 4X4 for 2.5 hours into Danum Valley to one of the oldest primary rainforests in the world.
Palm oil plantations along the highway

Palm oil tree fruits on their way to be processed-

Refined palm oil- ready to used in food products and/or cosmetics.
*Interesting fact: palm oil is the most widely consumed vegetable oil on the planet.

Good-bye to George

Our route to the Borneo Rainforest Lodge-
It was all 2-lane gravel road... our driver called it a "free massage".
We were given a refreshing welcome complete with grass necklaces, a cool washcloth and lemongrass ginger water.
Our plan is to explore here for the next 3 days/4nights.

Standard gear for trekking in the rainforest includes water bottles and LEECH SOCKS!

The flora seems "prehistoric"

Oversized plants and oversized roly-polies!
Actually this is a pill millipede but look what it does...

If touched, it rolls up in to the size of a ping pong ball!

The orangutans in this protected area are followed by researchers and known by name.
This is Kong- a large dominant male. He can be identified by his large flange (flappy cheek pads) &  a finger that sticks out straight, from a past injury.
Humidity rising in the forest-
Yes, things were wet even when it didn't rain AND it was HOT!
Red-leaf Monkey-
named so because they like to eat red leaves

Such a treat! A cool pool on the patio of our room to help us cool down after walking in the forest-
No "safari" is complete without the night trek-
This first night we took the "drive"

This leopard cat was trying to avoid having his photo taken but we watched him catch and devour a frog-
If the plant in front had not obstructed the focus, you would see the cat's face with 2 frog legs sticking out of his mouth!
And at night, always spiders...
A delicious BBQ dinner to round out the day-
