Nature Walk & Port Douglas

Thursday, May 14, 2015

This morning we again enjoyed  Thala and were led by the head gardener, Brett, through the grounds to explore the flora and fauna.  In the afternoon we took the bus to the town of Port Douglas, known by locals as "Port".  Here we relished meat pies & browsed the shops.

Orchids that grow on trees

No, this is not a reptile- It is a bird!
Nocturnal Tawny Frogmouths are very rare to see in the daytime.
If I had not seen the feathers with binoculars I would have never believed it was not a lizard...

Green Tree Ants-
They build these nests in the trees & taste like lemon
*Yes, we ate them (Ross mostly).

Lace Monitor Lizard

The "resident" wallaby that came by the resort every morning for brekky

Mocka's Meat pies in Port Douglas
Kanagroo, crocodile and steak- this go round the crocodile won the best taste award.

Good motto for a long family trip!

Huge Strangler Fig tree- we think this beats the size of the one in the Royal Gardens in Sydney
