Clotheslines and Crossbows in Cortona-

May 4-

Our second car trip to visit another Etruscan city was much less remarkable than the first- the weather was sunny and both the driver and map reader were more confident in their responsibilities!

We waited to head out until afternoon so that I could do some much needed housekeeping and the boys could play.  It was fun to see what games they came up with without many toys around...

First of 4 loads!!
What do you do with 2 boys but only 1 water gun?
Use an umbrella for a shield!  ....wonder if that idea came from the weaponry from the Doge's attic....

Cortona was one of the largest Etruscan settlements but it's real fame began when Under the Tuscan Sun brought it to the big screen (not really, but that is my first introduction to this charming city).

Like Volterra it also has an Etruscan museum and Medici Fortress but our time in this town was spent interacting with archers and viewing a very elaborate and somewhat serious Medieval Crossbow Competion.   Once the festivities started, the boys could not be swayed to see other sights.  This spectacle was much more elaborate than the festival we saw in Florence's Cascine park and we had a "front row" spot.  There were multiple teams each from a different district with specific colored costumes-  it seemed very authentic & the fun from the competitors was contagious.
