Faroe Islands Day 3

Sunday, June 4, 2017

The Faroes are a nature lover & hiker's paradise.  We have several hikes planned while we are here & today we drive to the second largest village on the islands, Klaksvik.  From here we ferry to the island of Kallsoy to walk along a sheep's trail that has been used by village people for hundreds of years.  Our "walk" as Tummas calls it, takes us to a location featured on the cover of National Geographic...

The weather here is unpredictable-
This morning fog covers the sky...still beautiful...

The ferry at Sydradalur will take us to the village of Trollanes (means Trolls Point)

The front bow of the ferry raises to allow the cars to disembark

The islands road system consists of narrow winding paths that tunnel through the mountains-
a majority of the tunnels are only wide enough for one car...inside are areas to pull to the side to allow oncoming traffic to pass...yikes!

Near the trail head of Kallin, we come upon this beautiful garden patch of rutabagas

We sure are glad to have Tummas leading us...do you see the path?!?

Up, Up we go!

The grass really is this green

Faroese sheep

We stop at the top to admire the beauty and feast on packed sandwiches-
It is difficult to see but there is a small black dot on the left side of the cliff...it is a sheep enjoying his lunch too!  The Faroese sheep are surefooted and fearless!

Troll's Point-
(after we descended!)

Easy to understand why this landscape is featured by Nat Geo-
In this photo you can see our narrow trail.

Many parts of the trail felt like walking on a balance beam,
allowing us to hike only in a single file line

The statue of the Seal Woman in Mikladalur-
We viewed her on a day when the sea was calm...Tummas tells us that it is not uncommon for the waves to come crashing over her.
Of course there is a story about her...

I will not share the full story here but legend tells that the seal people come to land once a year at midnight and shed their seals skins to dance until the sun rise.

Do we see her shedding her skin or getting ready to return to the sea???

The ferry coming to take us back to Torshavn

We ate dinner at a seafood tapas restaurant, Barbara's (named for a character in a Faroese story)-
One of the dishes...Horse mussels

Drying fish outside of the restaurant-
**notice that it looks like daylight still...it is close to 10pm
