As we go along, and the days are full, I get further and further behind on the blog!
Today we have crossed into a new month and tomorrow morning are actually leaving Iceland for the Faroe Islands...
The truth is that I love to spend time (too much time) "processing" our experiences and even though I have this great desire to accurately and specifically document all the little details because I do not want us to forget what we've seen and learned,... I need to be more efficient with the time that I have for blogging...
This is one (of the many) reason I am so thankful for Matt's photos and lean on that old adage that "a picture is worth a thousand words".
So. Going forward, less words & more photos.
Day Six Iceland: Full day of driving along the East Fjords with spectacular landscapes and stops at small little fishing communities.
First sighting of reindeer as they are more abundant in the north |
In Stokksnes: Viking Village- A re-creation for a movie set that lost its funding but now the farmer has opened to the public |
It was great fun to explore the turf houses... |
...and the dungeon!?! |
Black beach facing Vestrahorn also known as "Batman Mountain" because of its Batman symbol shaped peaks- *unfortunately the fog prevented a clear view |
A huge basaltic rock by the ocean- I can't recall the name but Icelanders typically keep names simple so it is likely that this is called "Big Rock" |
All along the coast were these impressive cliffs- Notice the little white dots... |
... Arctic Terns nesting! |
During many portions of the drive, we were "socked in" |
The fishing village of Djupivogur- stop for a fish & chips lunch... |
...and dessert. |
Not only does the town of Djupivogur boast the biggest meringue but also the biggest bird eggs!
Along the waterfront are granite replicas of the eggs of Icelandic birds, 34 in all, by a famous Icelandic sculptor. |
Iceland is the land of waterfalls! One member of our groups feels he has seen enough already to last his lifetime... |
This reminded us of the Incan terraces we saw last year in Peru |
I could write a story here about this young boy... We met him when we pulled into a gas station (that happened to be shut down but our GPS did not realize it). He had set up a booth selling rocks & seashells to tourists who were using the same GPS system as us, so that he could make enough krona to buy himself another fidget spinner!! If you find yourself near Breiddalsvik I imagine you will meet him too- |
Imagine this as a panorama as far as you can see on one side, |
and this on the other side!
This is the fishing village of Faskrudsfjordur which was originally settled by the French and used as a main fishing station during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The street signs in the village are still in French. |
After we drove through a 6 kilometer long tunnel, we reached our destination for the night in Egilsstadir. Our hotel, Hotel Egilsstadir overlooked Lake Lagerfljot, home to the Lagerfljot Worm, Iceland's Loch Ness Monster.
Before dinner or seeking out the legendary worm, we had to grab our bags out of the back...
If you want to know how often the weather changes in a day, just look at the many layers that we used on the road for this ONE day!! |
Finally the beautiful blue skies again, great for walking to dinner- *Note that it was close to 8:30 pm when this photo was taken |
Yes, second dessert of the day- Dipped ice cream cones in Iceland, a must- WAY BETTER than Dairy Queen |
