Iceland Day 9- Heading West

May 28, 2017

Today we drive westward across the top of the country driving through Akureyri, the second largest urban area in Iceland, second to Reykjavik. We have a 1 night stopover near the Vatnsnes Peninsula before heading to the westernmost leg.

We decided to start the day with a nice hot swim before the long  drive.
Jarobodin- Myvatn Nature Baths-
the north's Blue Lagoon

This one has massage showers!

Godafoss Waterfall "Fall of the gods"-
legend has it that once the country accepted Christianity as the national belief system in the year 1000,
all of the Norse god idols were thrown into this waterfall

What appears as fog in this photo is the spray from the falls

Beautiful blue skies for our road trip today

Akureyri- population 18,000

First signs of summer- flowers blooming

Delicious lunch spot

Once again, the landscape changes

The iconic red roofed farmhouse

Icelandic horses

We've noticed in almost every country we've visited that the "Danger"signs are always in German

Kolugljufur Canyon Waterfall

It takes it name from a  troll named Kola who supposedly dug the ravine and continues to live there to this day

The canyon runs for a full 1 kilometer & is 40-50 meters deep

Just stunning!

A grouping of mothers and foals

Ending up where we started...a nice hot swim to end the day.
We've arrived at Hotel Laugarbakki near Hvammstangi having driven a total of 2450K since beginning our trek in Iceland!!
